Summer paving plans

NEWFANE — NEWFANE - Portions of Dover Road and Auger Hole Road are scheduled for paving this summer, according to Roads Foreman Todd Lawley.

Springfield Paving was one of three companies that submitted bids to the town for the projects. The Selectboard voted to accept Springfield's bid at the June 6 regular Board meeting.

Springfield's bid is for $55.63 per ton in-place; the estimated costs of the projects are $116,823 for Dover Road and $79,272.75 for Auger Hole Road.

During the Roads Report, Lawley told the Board other roads may get paved this summer. Lawley also said his department is retaining about $10,000 to seal cracks in town roads to extend the life of the pavement.

Scofflaw dog list released

NEWFANE - Town Clerk Gloria Cristelli supplied a list of “37 owners who collectively own 56 [unlicensed] dogs” to the Selectboard at their June 6 regular Board meeting.

She noted the list contains the names of only those owners “that we know of that have not registered their dogs,” and the list includes only those dogs “in town for more than 90 days.” These owners and their dogs are in violation of town dog ordinances.

Cristelli pointed out that about half of the animals on the list have no record of updated rabies shots.

She gave this list to the Board, and to Animal Control Officer Michael Young, to, as she said, “nudge them along."

Young, who was at the Board meeting, assured town officials he would start contacting the owners by telephone. He also asked residents with issues with dogs running wild to please call him at the Town Offices, or directly at 802-380-0311.

Creamery demo delay explained

NEWFANE - As locals wait for the demolition of the beloved Newfane Creamery, which burned down in March, members of the Selectboard report they have heard numerous complaints about its unsightly appearance and possible health hazard.

At the June 6 regular Selectboard meeting, Board member Gary Delius explained the property owners were waiting for EPA approval and contractor availability, and demolition should start by mid-June.

Administrative Assistant Shannon Meckle confirmed in an email to The Commons that demolition has begun and is “about 50-60 percent complete now."
