Selectboard meets new state police commander

NEWFANE — NEWFANE - The new commanding officer of the new Vermont State Police Troop D barracks in Westminster, Lt. Timothy Oliver, stopped by to introduce himself to the Selectboard at their July 18 regular Board meeting.

Oliver replaces Lt. Paul Favreau, whom Oliver described as moving “on to greener pastures - he's running the [drug] task force now.”

At the Board meeting, Oliver filled townspeople in on the changes at the VSP. The Brattleboro and Rockingham barracks closed earlier this month and the new Westminster barracks is now in operation and providing coverage for the area, including Newfane, which contracts with the VSP for its law-enforcement needs.

“We're the largest barracks in the state, with the largest territory to cover, so it should be interesting,” Oliver said.

Although the Westminster station puts Newfane about twice the distance as it is from the former Brattleboro barracks, Oliver assured Board members Newfane calls will have “much quicker response times” because the troopers will not spend their time in the barracks. They will mostly be on the road with “mobile data computers,” Oliver said.

An open house is planned for the new barracks, but Oliver didn't have the date, noting the VSP makes those plans. He invited interested members of the public to contact him for a tour of the facilities.

Coming soon: Paving

NEWFANE - Approximately 2 1/2 miles of the town highways - Dover Road and Auger Hole Road - will get paved beginning on Aug. 1, according to the July 18 Road Foreman's and Road Commissioner's Report.
