United Way seeks volunteers for annual Day of Caring

BRATTLEBORO — United Way of Windham County is recruiting more than 150 volunteers from local communities, companies, schools, and civic organizations to participate in volunteer service projects across Windham County on Saturday, Sept. 10, during its seventh annual Day of Caring.

According to a news release, an estimated $10,000 of labor will be donated during the largest one-day volunteer service event in the county.

Day of Caring is a great opportunity for businesses, organizations, and families to form volunteer teams and help the community. Everyone is encouraged to participate.

The day will begin at 8 a.m., with kick-off breakfasts at the Elks in Brattleboro and Our Place Drop-In Center in Bellows Falls. From 9 a.m. to noon, individuals, families, and volunteer teams in United Way T-shirts will spread out to sites throughout Windham County to provide volunteer service.

“The mission of the United Way of Windham County is to mobilize the caring power of the community,” Executive Director Carmen Derby said in the news release. “Day of Caring is the most visible time for volunteer engagement and it honors the work of our volunteers and supporters. We are so grateful to everyone who volunteers their time and talent throughout the year to create a strong Windham County.”

2016 Day of Caring project sites include:

•Â Bellows Falls - Our Place Drop-in Center.

•Â Brattleboro - Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center; Brattleboro Area Hospice; Groundworks Drop-In Center; The Family Garden; Brooks Memorial Library, Brattleboro Little League Field, New England Youth Theatre, Camp Waubanong, Winston Prouty Center for Child Development, The Gathering Place.

• Dummerston - Windham Child Care Association's Bookmobile.

• Westminster - Vermont Foodbank.
