'Diaper Dump' will support Time for a Change, a new diaper bank

BELLOWS FALLS - The community is invited to help fill a dump truck with diapers and baby wipes for local families in need at the “Diaper Dump” on Thursday, Nov. 10, from noon to 6 p.m., at Dari Joy in Bellows Falls.

Parks Place and Youth Services are asking for donations and will gladly accept any brand or size of diapers. They will also have a bin available to accept and repackage open packages of diapers that children have outgrown.

Parks Place and Youth Services are addressing the need for diapers in the Greater Falls area by forming Time for a Change, Vermont's first diaper bank. This resource is available to anyone in the Greater Falls Community and is supported by a $3,000 grant from the United Way of Windham County Spark Fund and community donations.

This project will run with the help of the Just Us Mom's Program. The diaper bank will be housed at Parks Place, so parents picking up diapers can also be exposed to numerous other programs. For more information, call Parks Place at 802-463-9927.

Alien bugs invade Moore Library

NEWFANE - “Invasion of the Alien Bugs!” a free program that will talk about the threat that the Asian Longhorned Beetle, Emerald Ash Borer, and Hemlock Woolly Adelgid pose to Vermont's trees and economy, will be presented on Thursday, Nov. 10, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., at the Moore Free Library, 23 West St..

Leaders Carolyn and Gary Katz will also focus on how to identify these three major pests (including sharing samples for people to see), how to help prevent infestations caused by the movement of firewood, and what to do if somebody sees one of the invaders.

Handouts to help in identification will be available for all participants to take home, with bug tattoos for kids. For more information, call the library at 802-365-7948.

Next WBA meeting features local legislators

WEST BRATTLEBORO - The next monthly meeting of the West Brattleboro Association will be held on Thursday, Nov. 10, at 6 p.m., at the Hayes Court Community Room on Garfield Drive.

Members of the Association will hear updates on various topics including the status of the Neighborhoods Fund and economic development initiatives.

Members of the town's legislative delegation will be present for a discussion of rules covering notification of hearings to abutters, specifically when those abutters are members of a cooperative or collective that owns the land beneath their homes. If there is time, other topics may be covered as well.

The West B Commercial Spaces subcommittee will meet Nov. 15 at the Green Mountain Market and Deli.

WBA monthly meetings are open to all residents and business owners, and anyone else interested in West Brattleboro.

BrattleMasters invites public to practice the perfect pitch

BRATTLEBORO - BrattleMasters, the local Toastmasters club, invites the public to its next meeting on Thursday, Nov. 10, to practice giving a one-to-two-minute “elevator pitch” on any topic.

The meeting will take place at the Marlboro College Graduate Center, 28 Vernon St., beginning at 6 p.m., and will also include prepared speeches, evaluations, and reports by members. Free car washes for veterans offered Nov. 11

BRATTLEBORO - For the ninth year, Burton Car Wash & Detailing Services, 873 Putney Rd., will participate in the Grace for Vets program.

Burton is offering a free car wash to all veterans and military service personnel. Washes will be given rain or shine from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Book sale, floral arranging workshop at Vernon library

VERNON - The Vernon Free Library is holding a book sale through Tuesday, Nov. 15. All are invited to browse used books and consider signing up for the floral arranging workshop set for Saturday, Nov. 19, at 10 a.m.

Luncheon, food sale at United Church

BELLOWS FALLS - The Women's Fellowship of the United Church of Bellows Falls will host a luncheon and sale at the church on School Street on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The luncheon will be served from 11 a.m. on and will include corn chowder, choice of sandwiches, chips, apple crisp, and beverages for $7.50 (adults) and $3.50 (children 10 and under).

The food sale includes baked goods, a raffle of a Thanksgiving theme basket, a gift certificate to Halladay's Harvest Barn, and a turkey from Lisai's. There will also be a silent auction of goods and services provided by church members. A table featuring the sale of handmade jewelry from Ugandan women, called Bead for Life, is planned. Proceeds from the sale help underwrite the outreach services of the Fellowship.

Hunter's Supper served in Stratton

STRATTON - Wardsboro Fire & Rescue will host a Hunters' Supper at the Stratton Town Hall, 9 West Jamaica Rd., on Saturday, Nov. 12, starting at 5 p.m.

The menu includes roast turkey, stuffing, gravy, potatoes, squash, creamed onions, cole slaw, homemade rolls, and homemade pies. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children under 13. Take-out meals will be available. All proceeds benefit Wardsboro Fire and Rescue.

Windham hosts harvest supper, square dance

WINDHAM - The annual Harvest Supper and Square Dance to benefit the Windham Community Organization will be held on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 5 p.m., at the Windham Meeting House, 26 Harrington Rd.

The traditional supper of ham, butternut squash, baked beans, scalloped potatoes (also gluten-free version), sweet breads, rolls, and assorted homemade pies will be served. Square dancing for the entire family, called by Sally Newton, will begin after supper.

The cost is $10 for adults, $5 children under 12, or $25 per family. Donations for the band are welcome. All are welcome.

Free breakfast at First Congregational

WEST BRATTLEBORO - First Congregational Church in West Brattleboro will host its free monthly breakfast on Sunday, Nov. 13, from 8 to 9:30 a.m.

They will serve scrambled eggs, sausage, pancakes, orange juice, fresh fruit, breakfast sandwiches, and hot beverages. All are invited to share community time over a hot meal. Donations accepted.

Historical Society presents a colorful view of Putney in the 1950s

PUTNEY - The Putney Historical Society holds its annual meeting on Sunday, Nov. 13, at 1 p.m., at Next Stage, 15 Kimball Hill.

A brief business meeting will be followed by “1953 Putney in Living Color!”, a film of scenes around Putney shot for the town's bicentennial in 1953.

The list of locations includes the West River Basket Company, Putney School, Putney Central School, Senator Aiken's home and his nursery, Darrow's Orchards, the Federated Church, Cumming's Store and the center of town, the Hannum, Goodell, Hamilton, Braley, Frost, Maley, Hubbard, Watson, and Scott farms, and much more.

Fall Osher lectures conclude

DUMMERSTON - The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute's autumn series of morning and afternoon lectures will end on Nov. 14.

In the final morning lecture, Jerry Levy will consider how humanism might address the crises of our time. In the afternoon series, Felicity Ratte will look at Islamic art in the world's foremost museums. Both presenters are on the faculty of Marlboro College.

The morning lecture runs from 10 a.m. to noon; the afternoon lecture, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Advance Care Planning workshop offered

BRATTLEBORO - On Monday, Nov. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m., a free interactive workshop called “Advance Care Planning: Digging into the Details” will be offered at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.

Presented by Franz Reichsman, M.D., the Associate Medical Director of Bayada Hospice, and Joanna Rueter, LICSW, Coordinator of Taking Steps Brattleboro, a project of Brattleboro Area Hospice, the workshop will take place in the Brew Barry Room as part of the Wellness Series.

This workshop addresses questions about Advance Care Planning and the written document called an Advance Care Directive. In case of a serious illness or accident, an Advance Directive names the person or persons authorized to speak for a patient who can't communicate and helps everyone involved know what to do.

Workshop participants will learn the terms used, gain clarity on the choices to be made, receive a blank directive, and learn who needs to receive a copy of the completed directive. To register, call Rueter at 802-257-0775, ext. 101.

Free computer help available for Putney area seniors

PUTNEY - Putney Cares and Landmark College will co-present a special two-session series of workshops hosted by the Putney Public Library to help Putney area seniors navigate electronic devices, social media, and the internet.

Back by popular demand, “Tablets, Computers, and Smart Phones, Oh My!” will be held on Monday, Nov. 14, and Wednesday, Nov. 16, in the morning at the Putney Public Library at 55 Main St. The starting time will be given when you RSVP.

Classes will provide one-on-one instruction to help seniors with computers or electronic devices. Classes are free and open to any Putney-area senior, but space is limited, so reservations are required to attend either of the sessions. Brattleboro Area AARP hosts presentation on postal fraud

BRATTLEBORO - On Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 1:30 p.m., at the Brattleboro Senior Center, 207 Main St., Postal Inspector Kristen Miller will speak about postal fraud and how senior citizens are especially targeted with fraudulent schemes to extract payments for debts not owed.

This talk, presented by Brattleboro Area AARP, will show how seniors can be proactive in exposing these scams.

All persons over 50, friends and guests, are invited to attend. Brattleboro Area AARP meets on the third Tuesday of each month.

History of Grand Teton National Park is subject of library talk

BRATTLEBORO - On Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m., at Brooks Memorial Library meeting room, Jeff Nugent will give a talk about the history and geography of Grand Teton National Park.

Nugent has been a volunteer at Grand Teton each September for the past six years, and he will share photographs and discuss some of the issues facing this fascinating and stunning national park.

This program is presented by Southeastern Vermont Audubon Society. It is free and open to the public.

Jamaica-Wardsboro Food Pantry prepares for Thanksgiving

WARDSBORO - Thanksgiving is right around the corner and preparations at the Jamaica/Wardsboro Community Food Pantry are underway.

Their Thanksgiving distribution, which will include a turkey and most of the necessities for a holiday meal, is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 21. Anyone interested in receiving assistance for the Thanksgiving holiday is asked to call by Nov. 16 to sign up.

The Community Food Pantry provides nutritious supplemental food for families with young children, the elderly, and those who by illness or circumstance find themselves in financial difficulties. It is located in the Vestry of the Wardsboro Yoked Parish at 135 Main Street in Wardsboro. Call Elaine at 802-874-7234 for additional information and to sign up.

Senior Meals serves Thanksgiving lunch

BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Senior Center and Brattleboro Senior Meals will host its annual Thanksgiving luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 17. The menu will include appetizer trays, roast turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, butternut squash, and assorted breads and pies. Appetizers will be served at 11:30 a.m.

The suggested donation for seniors over 60 is $4. All other diners are welcome. There will be a charge of $6.50 per meal for those under 60. Make your reservations early, as seating is limited to the first 150 callers. For reservations, call 802-257-1236 or 802-257-7570.
