New Year's closings

BRATTLEBORO - All Brattleboro Town offices will be open for normal business hours on Friday, Dec. 30. Offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 2, 2017, with the exception of emergency services.

Brooks Memorial Library will be open for regular hours on Dec. 30. It will be closed Dec. 31 through Jan. 2.

Parking is free at all metered spaces and in the pay-and-display lots Dec. 31 through Jan. 2. All other violations will be enforced.

Trash, recycling, and composting will be delayed one day all week.

Brattleboro seeks to fill committee vacancies

BRATTLEBORO - The town of Brattleboro is looking for citizens to serve on the following committees and boards: Agricultural Advisory Board Arts Committee, Citizen Police Communications Committee, Conservation Commission, Development Review Board (full member and an alternate), Energy Committee, Fence Viewers (by statute, must be legal voters of the Town), Honor Roll Planning Commission, Senior Solutions Advisory Council, and the SEVCA Board.

Dummerston seeks zoning administrator

DUMMERSTON - At its Dec. 7 meeting, the Selectboard accepted the resignation of Zoning Administrator Kathleen Hathaway.

The Selectboard has decided to offer that job in combination with that of Selectboard Assistant, another vacant position in the Town Office, if an applicant desires. The two jobs together would be a 22-hour-per-week position.

Free cancer support group at Grace Cottage

TOWNSHEND - For community members dealing with cancer, Grace Cottage is offering a free support group, beginning Monday, Jan. 2, and meeting for eight weeks.

Hearing the news that you or a loved one has cancer can stir a range of emotions. Some people feel shock, disbelief and anger; others experience sadness, fear and loss. This support group offers a safe environment to share all of these experiences and to learn from others facing similar obstacles. Cancer support groups can have powerful effects on quality of life and on the success of treatment and recovery.

Meetings will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Grace Cottage Community Wellness Center (Heins Building), 133 Grafton Rd. The group will be facilitated by Grace Cottage Behavioral Health Specialist Caroline Chase, M.S., Counseling Psychology.

Sunrise Rotary hosts 'Battle of the Boards' trivia night

BRATTLEBORO - On Monday, Jan. 9, at 6:30 p.m., the Sunrise Rotary Club will host “Trivia Night: Battle of the Boards” at the American Legion, 32 Linden St.

All nonprofits are welcome to fill a table and compete for the night's charity contribution. The event benefits the nonprofit chosen by or represented by the winning team.

Men's coffee hour group forming

TOWNSHEND - Men of all ages are invited to Grace Cottage for coffee, conversation, and a series of casual lectures on Wednesday mornings, Jan. 4 to Feb. 22.

The Men's Coffee Hour will be held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. in the Grace Cottage Community Wellness Center (Heins Building), 133 Grafton Rd.

The free lecture series will cover a range of topics, including Vermont's agricultural history, the West River Railroad, Windham County forestry, the role of the Grace Cottage Community Health Team, and more. Coffee and snacks will be provided.

SEON to offer workshop on heating systems

BRATTLEBORO - On Thursday, Jan. 19, the Sustainable Energy Outreach Network will deliver a full-day program on “Cold Climate Heat Pumps, Pellet Boilers, and Other Renewable Thermal Heating Systems.”

This is a technical program for installers, architects, builders, and project managers to learn about these thermal heating systems.

Topics will include: Heat Pump Overview; Air-Source Heat Pump Performance; Combustion-Based Heating Systems; Biomass Boilers Performance; Solar-Assisted Domestic Hot Water and Space Heating Performance.

The program will take place in Room 2C of the Marlboro College Graduate Center, 28 Vernon St. Tuition is $150; Network members pay $100. Lunch is not provided. The instructor is Bart Bales of Bales Energy Associates in Greenfield, Massachusetts.
