First Congregational to serve free breakfast

WEST BRATTLEBORO - First Congregational Church of West Brattleboro will host a free breakfast on Sunday, Feb. 12, from 8 to 9:30 a.m.

They will offer a hot, nutritious breakfast of scrambled eggs, sausage, pancakes, orange juice, fresh fruit, hot homemade biscuits, and hot beverages for all.

Osher lecture looks at 'The Age of Trump'

DUMMERSTON - On Feb. 13, from 10 a.m. to noon, Michael Krasner will present a lecture and discussion on the new administration, titled “America in the Age of Trump: How did we get here? Where are we going? What can we do?”

The lecture is open to the public and sponsored by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Brattleboro Chapter. All are welcome.

Michael Krasner has been on the political science faculty at Queens College, City University of New York, since 1970, teaching courses on politics and the media, and on presidential, congressional, gubernatorial, and mayoral elections, among other topics.

The talk will analyze how Donald Trump became president, what he and his allies have done so far, the resistance to their efforts, and the possibilities of creating an enduring opposition. Krasner will compare Trump's style and program with fascism and consider what can be done to stop him and his allies in the short term and to reconstruct a progressive politics in the long term.

The lecture will be held at the Vermont Learning Collaborative, 471 US Route 5. Parking and handicapped access are available, and light refreshments will be served. Admission is $6. For further information, call Libby Mills at 802-387-5596.

Senior Meals will host Valentine's lunch

BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Senior Center and Brattleboro Senior Meals will host a Valentine's Day Celebration at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at the Gibson-Aiken Center, 207 Main St.

The celebration will include chocolates, flowers, and a heart-healthy meal. The menu for the day is baked fish, rice pilaf with peppers, and steamed spinach with strawberry rhubarb cobbler for dessert. The cost of the meal is a suggested donation of $3.50 for those over the age of 60 and $6 for all others.

BF Woman's Club to meet

BELLOWS FALLS - Members of the Bellows Falls Woman's Club will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at the United Church on School Street, beginning at 1:30 p.m.

The program will be presented by Wayne Blanchard, who will share his expertise in the field of genealogy. Members are reminded to bring nonperishable food and personal care items to be donated to Our Place Drop-in Center and to wear red in honor of American Heart Month.

The Jan. 10 meeting featured students from the Westminster Center School who, under the leadership of music teacher Ashley Paine, sang several selections to entertain club members and guests. The club is planning a public high tea for May 7, with details to be announced.

Southern Vermont Astronomy Group to meet

CHESTER - The Southern Vermont Astronomy Group will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m., at the Whiting Library, 117 Main St.

They will discuss the celestial highlights of 2017, including the Aug. 21 solar eclipse as well as other celestial objects that can be seen with the naked eye, binoculars, or telescopes.

BEEC Chocolate Scat sampler for Valentine's Day

BRATTLEBORO - Once again, the Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center is offering an unusual way to express your sentiments on Valentine's Day, with the Scat Collection - a sampler of lifelike and life-size wildlife scat made from perfectly tasty and entirely edible ingredients.

These chocolates are hand-crafted by naturalist-trained volunteers, and come with natural history information on the species represented: raccoon, otter, red fox, and moose. Ingredients have been chosen to simulate items found in the animals' diets.

Proceeds from the Scat Collection will go toward the Center's camp scholarship fund, ensuring that kids can enjoy a nature camp experience regardless of income.

The samplers will be available at the Brattleboro Food Co-op, the Putney Food Co-op, the Guilford Country Store, Vermont Country Deli, Brattleboro Veterinary Clinic, Grafton Village Cheese, KidsPLAYce, and Ratu's Liquor & Market in Wilmington. Prom wear needed

CHESTER - The Chester-Andover Family Center is collecting prom wear for a special event to be held in April prior to local high school proms. Every teen deserves to attend his or her prom dressed in beautiful, affordable prom wear.

At their first prom-wear event last April, teens from Chester and surrounding communities converged on the Center to shop for the perfect prom outfit. For $20, a complete new or nearly new outfit, including dress or suit, shirts, shoes, and accessories could be purchased.

Now, the Center needs to replenish its prom-wear inventory with dresses, tuxedos, dress shirts, ties, and dress shoes for girls and guys. The goal is to be fully stocked with prom wear by March 1.

The thrift shop, located in Chester at 908 Vermont Route 103S, is open to receive donations during regular business hours - Tuesdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesdays noon to 6 p.m., Fridays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
