AARP holds anti-fraud program at Grace Cottage

TOWNSHEND — Grace Cottage Hospital, in cooperation with AARP Vermont's Fraud Watch Network, will host a presentation, “The Weapons of Fraud,” on Tuesday, April 4, at 1 p.m.

According to a news release, Americans are constantly being barraged by con artists and scammers: In 2016, over 21 million Americans were victim to fraud; more than $19 billion fell into the hands of con artists.

The presentation, by Elliott Greenblott, Vermont Fraud Watch Network Coordinator, has been seen by hundreds of Vermonters during the past year. It examines current fraud trends, the psychology of fraud, fraud prevention, and a review of resources available to all at no cost.

According to Greenblott, identity theft and consumer fraud of every type are increasing.

“From the imposters claiming to be IRS agents to the computer-tech-support scams, to the bulk-mailed contests, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of attempts to defraud the public,” he said. “We are seeing scams perpetrated across the age spectrum. Even newborn infants are being targeted for identity theft via stolen Social Security numbers.”

The presentation provides clear examples of scams and concrete protection steps for all ages.

“Our program provides free information and resources including a national hotline to assist people who feel they may have become victims,” said Greenblott, who urges anyone interested in becoming an active volunteer to contact him at 413-219-9778 or [email protected].

In addition, he said that any community group can contact him for a free presentation on fraud, identity theft, and computer scamming.
