DOVER — The Windham Solid Waste Management District recently received a $30,297 grant from the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources' Department of Environmental Conservation to assist the District with the expenses associated with its hazardous-waste collection programs.
The grant provides assistance for “convenient hazardous-waste collections for residents and Conditionally Exempt Generators ... and to educate the public about proper disposal and alternative non-hazardous products.” The grant is awarded annually, in April, to municipalities by the DEC.
District residents are encouraged to take part in a springtime hazardous-waste collection, which will be held on Saturday, May 20, from 8 a.m. to noon, at the Dover Transfer Station, 11 Landfill Rd.
There is a fee of $5 and a limit of 10 gallons of hazardous waste per household. The collection is open to all District residents and businesses. Businesses may participate in the collection for a fee. Pre-registration is required for businesses only.
Household-generated products that will be accepted include: roofing tar, varnishes, paint strippers/thinners, automotive fluids, car wax, driveway sealer, pool chemicals, chemical fertilizers, weed killers, pesticides, insecticides, spot removers, bleach, polishes, drain/toilet cleaners, mothballs, and flea control products.
Unacceptable items include explosives, ammunition, fireworks, radioactive waste, electronic waste, medical waste, empty containers, fluorescent bulbs, and latex paint.
Residents are encouraged not to bring paint products, such as primers, sealers, stains, enamels, varnishes, and oil based and latex paints, to the hazardous-waste event, but instead to the year-round WSWMD drop-off center on Old Ferry Road in Brattleboro.
