Old pictures of Windham County go on display for first time in a century

NEWFANE — The Photo Committee of the Wardsboro History Group will present “Windham County 100 years ago,” on Wednesday, June 21, at 7 p.m., at Union Hall on West Street in Newfane Village.

Many people have enjoyed the old photographs from the Porter Thayer collection over the years, but the photographs presented in this evening's program will be seen for the first time in over a century, according to a news release.

Hundreds of glass plates which have been in the family's private collection up to now have recently been loaned to the Photo Committee of the Wardsboro History Group to be developed and cataloged for the first time since Porter Thayer processed them himself.

The Photo Committee of the Wardsboro History Group has been diligently cataloging and developing old glass plates and negatives for 25 years and this presentation will include photographs by not only Porter Thayer but other well known photographers who also documented Windham County's history in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Photo Committee - Bob and Janet LeBlond, Danny Hescock, Charlie Marchant, Jane Robinson, Carol Besette, Lester Dunklee, and Jan Hull - meets one night a week and spends several hours processing, discussing, and identifying old photos of the area. During the slide show of old photographs, the Committee welcomes members of the audience to share their personal knowledge about the scenes and faces in the images.

Admission is free. Sponsored by the Historical Society of Windham County. Questions? Call 802-348-7891, or contact: [email protected].
