WSESU Summer Food program holds kick-off event

BRATTLEBORO — On Monday, June 26, families are invited to visit the Living Memorial Park in Brattleboro for an afternoon of friends, food, and fun.

A free pizza lunch will be available to all kids and teens 18 years or younger between noon and 1 p.m. There will also be fun activities for kids and information about where to access free summer meals around Windham County, according to a news release.

Children and families can stay for free swimming at the Living Memorial Park pool from 1 to 4 p.m., compliments of the Brattleboro Recreation & Parks Department.

In case of inclement weather, this celebration will be postponed until Wednesday, June 28.

The Summer Food kick-off event is a collaboration between Windham Southeast Supervisory Union, the sponsor of the Brattleboro meal sites, Brattleboro Recreation & Parks Department, and United Way of Windham County, which convenes the Summer Food subcommittee of the Hunger Council of the Windham Region.

The Summer Food Service Program is funded by the USDA, the town of Brattleboro, and local donors.

Last summer, more than 15,000 free meals were served to youth in Brattleboro, an increase of more than 1,800 meals from the year before.

This year, meals will be available at a number of sites around Brattleboro, including the Boys and Girls Club, Brooks Memorial Library, Ledgewood Heights, Living Memorial Park, Moore Court, Westgate, and Academy School.
