GUILFORD — The Route 5 bridge site in Algiers Village has been transformed during the past two weeks.
On July 21, in 16 hours, four prefabricated bridge units weighing 700,000 pounds were set on top of new bridge abutments.
According to Project Information Officer Jill Barrett, construction crews from Renaud Bros. of Vernon have, so far, placed concrete for sidewalk and bridge railings; set the approach slab for the north side of the bridge; placed stone and soil to shape the embankment around the north abutment; and begun building the retaining wall at the north abutment.
This week, Barrett says Renaud Bros. plans to shape the slope around the south abutment, install bridge rail and guard rail, install granite curbing, fine grade the subbase for the roadway, prepare the road for paving, install pavement throughout the site, and install drainage at Bee Barn Road.
The Vermont Agency of Transportation expects work to be completed on the bridge by Aug. 6.
