Historical Society, library host annual Main Street sales

GRAFTON — Main Street will be busy with special sales on Saturday, Sept. 2, when the Grafton Historical Society and the Grafton Public Library hold their annual fundraising events.

The Grafton Historical Society will hold its Bake Sale, Mum Sale, and Silent Auction from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in front of its museum on Main Street.

At the same time, the Grafton Public Library will be selling myriad used books on the library lawn near the bridge on Main Street from 9 a.m. to noon.

Early birds can get the best selection of baked goods at the historical museum, and coffee and doughnuts will be sold for morning shoppers. Lunch will be offered starting at about 11 a.m. at the museum, with homemade chili, hot dogs, and sodas.

As part of the Historical Society sale, large and small pots of mums will be sold in various fall colors, as well as an assortment of collectible items from the museum's collection and those of its members.

A silent auction and raffle are scheduled, featuring such popular items as Bill Brown's famous apple pies, Metropolitan Opera tickets, a cord of green wood from David Rodgers, a quilt made by Joan Lake, a glass creation from Hunter Gallery of Fine Art, pizza dinner from Ed and Kim Banks, an original watercolor painting from the Yellow Door Gallery, Plummer's maple syrup, Carol Lind's pillows, and a Christmas special item from The Mercantile.

Gift certificates will be included in the auction items. The silent auction closes at 3 p.m. Sale of antique and collectible items won't begin until 9 a.m.

At this Saturday event, the Grafton Historical Society will introduce a new children's book, The Grafton Cavaliers, by Thomas Fontaine. It will be on sale for the first time that day. Author Fontaine, who last year produced The Messenger Boy of Grafton, will be at the museum to sign books and discuss this new, second Civil War book for children.

Funds raised from each event will go for the operations of the Public Library and the Grafton Historical Society museum, respectively.
