Vernon church highlights 500th anniversary of Reformation with film series

VERNON — On Friday, Oct. 27, the Mountain View SDA Church in Vernon will kick off a new series discussing the future of the Christian church and what is happening with world events.

This free, three-part series, called “A Pale Horse Rides,” will involve both documentary-style and live elements, featuring local moderator Pastor Art Miller. The video documentary portion is hosted by Voice of Prophecy speaker/director Shawn Boonstra.

“A Pale Horse Rides” begins Friday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. at Mountain View SDA Church located at 1002 Fort Bridgman Road, Vernon, VT. It will continue Saturday, Oct. 28, at 11 a.m. and at 2 p.m. All are welcome to attend this free event. Attendees will receive a copy of Boonstra's new book, A Pale Horse Rides.

According to a news release, this series will address questions such as: “Did something go wrong at the dawn of Christianity? What happened to the Christian churches outside of the Roman Empire? How, exactly, did our ancestors become Christians? How does the Bible deal with the fact that Christians are sometimes less than Christ-like? What would the church look like without the merger of church and state? How can people have the strong faith of their ancestors? What is the future of Christianity?”

Filmed on location in countries such as Ireland and Germany, the documentary portion tells the story of an ancient tribe that mysteriously converted and built their faith upon the words of the Bible.

“These fearless men and women lived their faith during some of this world's darkest hours,” Boonstra said. “They paved the way for Luther ... as well as us. Your own faith will be deepened by what they accomplished.”

Topics will include “Rome Is Burning,” “Barbarian Fire,” and “An Underground Movement.” This series will feature stories from the 1,200 years that led up to Martin Luther's nailing the 95 Theses on the Wittenberg Castle Church door and the start of the Reformation.
