Paving set to begin Nov. 2
BRATTLEBORO - On Thursday, Nov. 2, Mitchell Sand and Gravel will start Brattleboro's annual Capital Paving Project. The contractor will begin milling small joints at intersections and project limits. Weather allowing, paving on Washington Street and Frost Place will be on Friday, Nov. 3.
Subsequently, paving will take place on Willow Street, Williams Street, Terrace Street, Tyler Street, Bradley Avenue, and Black Mountain Road. The contractor may work Saturday, Nov. 4, if the weather cooperates. On-street parking will be affected and motorists are advised to seek alternate routes.

Newfane Garden Club to meet
NEWFANE - The November meeting of the Newfane Garden Club will be at the Newfane Congregational church on Thursday, Nov. 2, at 2 p.m.
The program will address getting ready for a spring vegetable planting by starting a garden inside during the winter. Guests are always welcome.
Day of the Dead celebration and Community Altar on Nov. 3
BRATTLEBORO - The 15th Annual Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) Celebration and Community Altar will take place during November Gallery Walk, Friday, Nov. 3, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Experienced Goods Thrift Shop, 77 Flat St.
Inspired by the Latin American holiday when families gather to honor loved ones who have died, staff and volunteers from Brattleboro Area Hospice create an ofrenda, or large community altar. The public is invited to bring items to lay on the ofrenda to honor a loved one (photocopied pictures and objects of no great concern are recommended, since items cannot be returned.)
Colorful papers and pens will be available to write memorial notes to leave on the altar. This celebration can be a way - for children especially - to express a connection with and memories of a loved one who has died. Light refreshments will be offered. Apple picking for a cause in West B
WEST BRATTLEBORO - On Saturday, Nov. 4 (rain date, Nov. 5), from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Cortland Hill Orchard, 72 Miller Rd., invites members of the Brattleboro community to come to their farm and work and maybe even have a little fun in the process.
There will be two choices of work details - gleaning apples, which will go to the Vermont Food Bank for local distribution, or bringing clippers and workboots and helping to cut brush and invasive plants around some of the mowings. A 'burn' pile will be created for later burning when snow is on the ground.
Doughnuts, hot or cold cider, and cheese and crackers will be served with plenty of crisp, unlimited fresh air. For more details, call Nancy at 802-254-6925.
Soup and stew supper in Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE - Jacksonville Community Church presents its sixth annual Harvest Soup and Stew Supper on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 5 to 7 p.m.
The supper will be at the Fellowship Hall behind the church on Route 112 in Jacksonville across from Honora. A variety of home-made soups and stews will be available, and salad and desert will be included. Suggested donation is $10 for adults, $5 for children under 10, and free for children under 3. Trinity Lutheran serves up Swedish meatballs
BRATTLEBORO - Trinity Lutheran Church, 161 Western Ave., will hold its annual Swedish meatball dinner on Saturday, Nov. 4, with seatings at 5 and 6:30 p.m.

Osher lectures conclude
BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Chapter of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute will hold the last in its current series of morning and afternoon lectures on Monday, Nov. 6, at the New England Youth Theatre, 100 Flat St.
In the morning lecture, Seth Harter, a professor of Asian studies and history at Marlboro College, will consider the ways the Japanese aesthetic is expressed in tea and garden ceremonies. In the afternoon session, Castle Freeman Jr., of Newfane, will read from and discuss his writings.
The Osher Lectures are held on six successive Mondays. Morning lectures run from 10 a.m. to noon; afternoon lectures, from 1 to 3 p.m. All lectures are held at NEYT.
