‘New’ circus troupe to perform at NECCA’s new trapezium

BRATTLEBORO — New England Center for Circus Arts' (NECCA) holds its inaugural show at its new custom trapezium on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 7:30 p.m.

The building has been open to classes since June, but this is the first time a show has been put on under the vast high-ceilinged space.

NECCA welcomes award winning guest company LAVA from New York City performing and teaching as part of the 21st Circus Workshop Weekend that runs from Nov. 10–12.

LAVA is an Obie and Bessie award-winning feminist acrobatic dance company known for awe-inspiring feats that push the boundaries of dance, gravity and gender expectations.

Their choreographic language incorporates acrobatics, trapeze, social dance, sports, contact improvisation and other contemporary forms. Their credo is: “There is no right side up. We are all connected through movement.”

LAVA will bring their newest work, A Goddessy, to Brattleboro for one show only. It is a 75-minute piece that takes the form of a survival story. A traveler journeys from a gray and patriarchal present to a rainbow-colored feminist future with the help of ancestors and guides, geologic and otherwise. All ages welcome, but the show does have some mature content.

NECCA's goal is to present a range of circus performances for audiences of all ages throughout the year, including advanced student recitals, ProTrack graduation showcases, and guest professional performances such as this from LAVA.

This show is part the school's intention to present the vital art form of circus, honoring its traditions, supporting its present, and inspiring its future and the many shapes that the art of circus takes upon the stage.
