BRATTLEBORO — The 2017 edition of the National Audubon Society's Christmas Bird Count will be held on Saturday, Dec. 16, in southeastern Vermont.
Groups will head out and canvas the area starting in the morning and counting all of the birds they see (numbers and species). This data is part of the longest running citizen-science project in the world.
In the evening, the group meets at Holly Bowen's house at 19 Whipple Street in Brattleboro for a compilation potluck. According to a news release, “good food, good bird gossip, and a bit of friendly competition between teams to find out who saw the most birds makes for a great night of fun! All are welcome!”
Those interested in joining a birding team for this year's count may contact Cory Ross at [email protected] to sign up. No experience with birding is necessary. Each team will have at least one experienced leader.
Anyone who would like to contribute to the count but isn't interested in walking around in the cold may may keep a feeder count during the day from home simply by making a note of the birds they see anytime they happen to look at their feeders.
