Shakespearean actor John Hadden offers workshop at Main Street Arts

SAXTONS RIVER — John Hadden, founding member of Shakespeare & Co., is offering the first of several Shakespeare workshops at Main Street Arts Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 20 and 21, from 6 to 9 p.m.

“We think of Shakespeare's language as old,” Hadden said in a news release, “but it is actually 400 years younger than ours.”

The former artistic director of Hubbard Hall Theater Co. has taught Shakespeare to everyone from eighth-graders to celebrity actors and is convinced that anyone who wants to can experience the thrill of fully expressing themselves, right here and now, through the words of the immortal bard.

“The work will be rigorous but not complicated, fun and amazing,” he said. “We begin by playing games with 12-line monologues and go from there.”

The workshop will continue with several weeks in May or June, culminating in a showing at the Main Street Arts Theater Festival on July 6. Participants may take part in one or all of the scheduled workshops, and participation in the festival isn't required.

The reduced fee of $50 for the January workshop is supported by Main Street Arts' Arts for Everyone Scholarship Fund. Pre-registration is required.
