BMC recital features Beethoven, Thuilles, Mendelssohn

BRATTLEBORO — The Brattleboro Music Center presents a Faculty Duo Recital with cellist Paul Cohen and pianist Nicholas Burns.

The concert - set for Sunday, April 29, at 4 p.m., at the BMC Auditorium - will feature Beethoven's Sonata in F Major for Piano and Cello, Op. 5, No.1; Thuille's Sonata in D Minor for Cello and Piano, Op. 22; and Mendelssohn's Sonata No. 2 in D Major for Piano and Cello, Op. 58.

Tickets are $30 for patrons, $20 general admission, and $10 for students, with BMC students under 18 admitted free.

Cohen, a BMC faculty member and cellist, has performed on major concert stages throughout the U.S., Europe and the Middle East. Since his orchestral debut at the age of 12 in his native Minneapolis, he has become increasingly in demand as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician.

His solo repertoire ranges from Gabrielli to the most current unaccompanied compositions. He has also commissioned works for a six-stringed electric cello and has given performances of the complete cycle of Beethoven Cello Sonatas and Bach Cello Suites in single concert formats.

A dedicated and inspiring teacher, his students have gone on to pursue their studies at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, NYU, Boston Conservatory, and Rice University. In 2013, he relocated to New England and is on the faculty of the BMC as well as Northfield Mount Hermon School. He is also a founding member of the Samara Piano Quartet.

Burns, a British pianist, has performed in the U.S., Canada, Spain, Germany, and around the U.K. His performances have been broadcast by BBC Radio 3 and Radio Maribou (Germany), and he has recorded three critically acclaimed albums for Nimbus.

He is most often heard alongside violinist Louisa Stonehill as part of the Steinberg Duo. This season sees his first appearances in New England, including a recital series at the Redfern Arts Centre at Keene State College, as well as the release of a new recording of Violin Sonatas by John Ireland, Franz Reizenstein, and Geoffrey Bush for Lyrita.
