The beans are back at West Brattleboro chicken barbecue

WEST BRATTLEBORO — After a one-year hiatus, Helen Robb of the Robb Family Farm is back baking beans for the West Brattleboro Association's annual Memorial Day weekend chicken barbecue on Saturday, May 26.

Held once again in front of the First Congregational Church of West Brattleboro, the event's chicken/beans/coleslaw staple will be accompanied by a bake sale from the folks at the church. The meals will be available starting at around 11 a.m until they're sold out.

Though Robb furnished the baked bean recipe last year, she and husband Charley were away for the big event and Sue Murray and Doug Cox filled in to count and cook the beans.

Robb's recipe, “Marjorie Thurber's Home-Baked Beans” as handed down from her mother, is recognized in a Yankee magazine collection entitled Great New England Recipes.

Joe Jewett and his crew will once again get the coals going early in the day for the chicken itself. The birds are being supplied by the Tessitores (Marc and Susan), proprietors of the Guilford Country Store and West Brattleboro village residents. The McDermet household, Kris and Stewart, will provide coleslaw.

The full meal is available for $10, or $7 for just the half-chicken. Proceeds will help fund the WBA's community activities and initiatives.

Also, Congregational Church members will be selling their delicious baked goods. Sales will support the church's programs.
