Chester Plant Sale set for June 1, 2

CHESTER - Spring is here, and the gardens are calling for attention. If you're off to a late start, visit the Chester Plant Sale on Friday, June 1, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, June 2, 8 to 11 a.m., on the side lawn of St. Luke's Church, 313 Main Street, Chester.

Plants featured are hardy perennials from Vermont gardens, as well as some special, hardened annuals that cannot be found locally. The plants offered are top notch and ready to go into the ground without additional hardening.

A group of gardeners has been working to dig, pot, and groom the specimens. A wide variety of generous pots with fresh soil and weeded plants await purchase. In addition, there will be information on invasive plants, Gardener's Log notebooks, homemade jams and preserves, and seasonal produce, if the weather cooperates. Also present will be knowledgeable gardeners eager to give advice on plants and design.

Profits from the sale will benefit both St. Luke's Church and the new Chester-Andover Elementary School playground. For questions, contact Lillian Willis at 802-875-1340.

REI event will explore urine reclamation

BRATTLEBORO - The Rich Earth Institute invites all local donors, friends, and families, as well as any interested participants in the Urine Nutrient Reclamation Project to a community gathering on June 7, from 6 to 8 p.m., in Brattleboro at 118 Elliot.

More than 100 local donors are completing the nutrient cycle by collecting their urine for use as fertilizer. The practice of diverting urine from the waste stream conserves water, prevents nutrient pollution, and provides a locally abundant source of fertilizer.

Rich in nitrogen and phosphorus, urine can be collected by installing special toilet systems or by using the REI's portable urinals, which can then be brought to a collection depot on Birge Street in Brattleboro.

Rich Earth sanitizes the urine through pasteurization before applying to hayfields with our farmer partners. This demonstration project serves as a platform for rigorous field research and has been funded by the USDA, EPA, Water Environment & Reuse Foundation and, currently, the National Science Foundation.

Food, drinks, and live music will be provided. Equipment will be available for purchase to become a new participant. Come hear about their latest projects and meet their extended staff. For more information, contact [email protected].
