PUTNEY — This month, audiences have a chance to hear four special pre-season concerts in the Big Barn.
On Tuesday, June 19, at 8 p.m., the New York-based JACK Quartet, “superheroes of the new music world” (The Boston Globe), will perform a special concert of works by Ferneyhough, Lim, Carter, Feldman, and Williams.
Winners of Lincoln Center's Martin E. Segal Award, New Music USA's Trailblazer Award, and the CMA/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, JACK Quartet (Christopher Otto, Austin Wulliman, violins; John Pickford Richards, viola; and Yellow Barn alumnus Jay Campbell, cello) has performed to critical acclaim throughout the U.S. and abroad.
According to The Washington Post, JACK is “the go-to quartet for contemporary music, tying impeccable musicianship to intellectual ferocity and a take-no-prisoners sense of commitment.”
June also brings four performances by musicians in Yellow Barn's Young Artists Program. This year, 27 outstanding young instrumentalists (strings, winds, piano, and percussion) and seven composers will travel to Putney from across the U.S. and abroad to spend three weeks exploring treasured works from the chamber music canon, as well as new works composed during the program.
Their concert series begins on Sunday, June 17, at 4 p.m., with seven world-premiere performances of works by Young Artists Program composers presented by their performer colleagues.
On Wednesday, June 20, at 8 p.m., YAP participants will perform a free concert for the community, including works by Andersson, Burtner, Crumb, Debussy, Korngold, Messiaen, and Shostakovich.
Two additional performances conclude the month: Thursday, June 28, and Friday, June 29, at 8 p.m., featuring seven additional new works by YAP composers alongside works by Bartók, Beethoven, Brahms, Cage, Mendelssohn, and Schubert.
Tickets for the JACK Quartet performance on June 19 are $20 ($17 for seniors, $10 for students). Tickets for June 17, 28, and 29 are $10 ($9 for seniors, $5 for students).
