Vermont Theatre Company to hold auditions for ‘Gaslight’

BRATTLEBORO — Vermont Theatre Company will host auditions for their production of Gaslight by Patrick Hamilton on Thursday, Jan. 24, at 6 p.m., and Saturday, Jan. 26, at 10 a.m., at the Hooker-Dunham Theater, 139 Main St.

The production will be directed by James Gelter, produced by Justin Fetterman, and performed on May 3-5 and 10-12.

Gaslight, sometimes known as Angel Street, is a Victorian thriller written in 1938. The play brought about the term “gaslighting,” which means “to manipulate someone by psychological means into questioning their own sanity.”

Bella feels she is losing her grip on reality. This theory is propagated by her husband, Jack, who accuses her of being responsible for a series of strange incidents that have happened in their home.

When the eccentric Detective Rough reveals to her that these incidents are not her fault, but are truly evidence of her husband's brutal crimes, Bella must find a way to bring Jack to justice.

The audition will be in the form of a group workshop. All auditioners will be required to arrive at the beginning of the workshop with a small passage of text memorized.

The text, and a breakdown of the characters, can be found on Vermont Theatre Company's Facebook page and at vermonttheatrecompany.org. If you plan on auditioning or have any questions, please email the director, [email protected], with the subject line “Gaslight."
