Windham Orchestra welcomes young soloists on Feb. 3

BRATTLEBORO — Winners of the Windham Orchestra Concerto Competition will perform with the Orchestra on Sunday, Feb. 3, at 3 p.m., at the Latchis Theatre.

Performers include Justin Zhou, cello, performing the first movement of Dvorák's Cello Concerto; Hannah Caris, on flute, performing Henri Duparc's Lénore Symphonic Poem after Bürger and Georges Hüe's Fantaisie; and Joseph Wang on viola, presenting Bohuslav Martinu's Rhapsody Concert.

Cellist Justin Zhou, 16, lives in Hanover, N.H., and attends Hanover High School. His music teacher is Emmanuel Feldman of the New England Conservatory of Music.

Hannah Caris, also 16, lives in South Hadley, Mass., and attends Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School. Her flute teacher is Alison Hale of Brattleboro, who teaches at Mount Holyoke College.

Joseph Wang, 16, plays the viola and lives in Shrewsbury, Mass. He attends Deerfield Academy and studies with Michael Zaretsky of the New England Conservatory.

The Windham Orchestra's annual Concerto Competition is open to serious instrumental and vocal music students in grades 9 through 12.

Eligible students must live or attend schools in the Vermont counties of Windsor, Windham, or Bennington; New Hampshire counties of Cheshire, Sullivan or Grafton; or Massachusetts counties of Berkshire, Franklin, or Hampshire.

The 2019 competition will be held March 31.
