Water line project update

BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Department of Public Works says Zaluzny Excavating has successfully installed the entire 275 feet of new 12-inch ductile iron water pipe and has begun the process of tying over buildings in the area.

Service interruptions will continue intermittently throughout this week until all new service lines are connected.

Shutdown for the Brooks House businesses and residences is scheduled to occur the evening of Wednesday, May 8, beginning at 10 p.m., and extending into the morning hours of Thursday, May 10, with all service restored no later than 7 a.m.

HCRS hosts free community cookout

BRATTLEBORO - Health Care and Rehabilitation Services, southeastern Vermont's community mental-health agency, will host a free hot dog cookout and open house in honor of Children's Mental Health Awareness Day.

According to the National Alliance of Mental Illness, 20 percent of youth ages 13-18 live with a mental health condition, and Vermont's Mental Health Scorecard indicates that 11 percent of youth in grades 9-12 have developed a plan to die by suicide. This event seeks to draw attention to the need for support for youth and families.

HCRS' Children's Mental Health Day events will be held on the afternoon of Thursday, May 9, at its regional office at 51 Fairview Street in Brattleboro from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Free hot dogs, chips, and cookies will be served, while supplies last. Next West Brattleboro Association meeting is May 9

WEST BRATTLEBORO - The next meeting of the West Brattleboro Association will be held on Thursday, May 9, at 6 p.m., in the Hayes Court Community Room on Garfield Drive (just west of the West Brattleboro Post Office).

The meeting will focus on updates for various projects and programs as well as planning for events like the Memorial Day weekend chicken barbeque and the Chamber window display.

Friends of RFPL host plant sale

BELLOWS FALLS - The Friends of the Rockingham Free Public Library's Annual Plant Sale will be held on Saturday, May 11, the day before Mother's Day.

Perennials, annuals, bulbs, shrubs, and ornamental grasses will be available. Organic herbs and vegetables will also be ready for pick-up and planting.

Campground plans fundraiser for summer camps for children with cancer

DUMMERSTON - The Brattleboro North KOA Journey on Route 5 will offer camping on Saturday, May 11, for $20 as part of Kampgrounds of America's 16th annual KOA Care Camps Big Weekend to benefit KOA Care Camps for children with cancer.

According to a news release, campers who stay as paying guests on Friday, May 10, will receive a night of camping on Saturday, May 11, for just $20. The entire $20 fee will benefit KOA Care Camps for children battling cancer.

Putney Cemetery Commission offers restoration workshop

PUTNEY - The Putney Cemetery Commission invites the community to a day of cemetery restoration led by Charles Marchant of Townshend on Saturday, May 11 (rain date is Sunday, May 12).

The workshop is at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, just north of the village center, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Drop by to lend a hand or just observe. Parking is available at Basketville.

The day will begin with a brief tour and assessment of the cemetery, followed by instruction and work to repair damage as time allows. Putney Library holds spring book sale

PUTNEY - Putney Public Library, 55 Main St., will hold its annual book sale on Saturday, May 11, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and on Sunday, May 12, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Browse an eclectic assemblage of pre-loved books, children's books, DVDs, CDs, and other media. All funds raised will benefit the library's programs. The library will not be open for regular library functions during this special event. For more information, call 802-387-4407.

WWHT hosts landlord education workshop

BRATTLEBORO - The Windham & Windsor Housing Trust, 68 Birge St., will hold its first-ever Landlord Education Workshop on Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The cost is $99 and the workshop will cover topics such as fair housing rules, budgeting for vacancies, deductible expenses, retaining tenants, paying for repairs, community resources, record keeping, and tax preparation.

Leonard Howard, the Brattleboro deputy fire chief, will speak about the Brattleboro Landlord Inspection program.

Mother's Day brunch in Guilford

GUILFORD - Broad Brook Grange will present its 23rd annual Mother's Day Brunch on Sunday, May 12, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Broad Brook Community Center.

The all-you-can-eat brunch features eggs and omelettes, any style, made to order. Also on the menu are pancakes, French toast, sausage, bacon, and home fries, with Guilford maple syrup. Other treats include home-baked coffee cakes and other baked goods, fresh fruit salad, and bread for toasting. A selection of juices will be available, along with coffee, teas, and milk.

No reservations are necessary for the meal, which is priced at $12 for adults; $10 for seniors, and $5 for ages 2-12. Kids under two are free.

Spring trail cleanup on Hogback

MARLBORO - On Sunday, May 12, from 9 a.m. to noon, there will be a spring trail cleanup at the Hogback Mountain Conservation Area off Route 9.

Volunteers will walk the entire trail system on the south side of Route 9, moving fallen branches, removing trash, and dealing with minor drainage issues.

Healthy aging educational series offered

TOWNSHEND - On Tuesdays, from May 14 through June 18, Grace Cottage Hospital offers a free, six-week Healthy Aging educational series for women over 60. The casual meetings will focus on matters of the mind, body, and spirit.

The group will be led by Grace Cottage Community Health Team member Deb Brown, RN. Brown is a diabetes educator at Grace Cottage. Throughout the series, she will be joined by special guest speakers. Lectures and presentations will be followed by group discussions.

Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary is accepting scholarship applications

BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary Club Foundation once again offers college scholarships to continuing-education students and graduating high school seniors from Brattleboro (including the Windham Regional Career Center), Leland & Gray, and Hinsdale, N.H.

Applications are being accepted for both the Brattleboro Sunrise Scholarship and the John Penfield Scholarship. A combination of financial need, academic achievement, and community service will be used as the criteria for selecting recipients. The Brattleboro Sunrise Scholarship is for students of any age pursuing post-secondary education or training in any field.

Applications are available at each school's guidance department and at the Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary Club website, brattleborosunriserotary.org, and must be submitted by Friday, May 17, to Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary Scholarship Committee, P.O. Brattleboro Garden Club to meet

BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Floral Arts & Garden Club will hold their regular monthly meeting on Monday, May 13, at Green Mountain Chapel near the covered bridge on Western Avenue.

This month's topic is “Floral Photography Workshop,” and will be led by Bill Steele. Steele will talk about the exposure triangle and some fundamental elements of close-up photography.

Participants should bring their camera or their cell phone - and questions, as there may be time to help figure out what all those little buttons and settings do.
