Volunteers pick up the roadsides in annual effort to remove litter

Hundreds of volunteers fanned their way through Windham County on May 4 for Green Up Day, Vermont's statewide cleanup of litter along 13,000 miles of roadsides. Robin Rieske, who organized efforts in Brattleboro, said the details of this year's efforts won't be available for a few days, but the event's website (greenupvermont.org) says the one-day workforce numbers 22,500.

Eli Coughlin-Galbraith observed that while driving between downtown Brattleboro and Bunker Farm in Dummerston, they “saw no fewer than three awesome teams picking up trash in and around Dummerston.”

Volunteer Nancy Braus found “an awful lot of bottles in a short stretch of West Hill Road, Putney and lower Putney Mountain Road - more than three full bags,” she said.

The Connecticut River Conservancy's volunteers also plucked more than 100 tires from wetlands around the West River.

Others found some oddities. April Lavoie came back with an old bumper for a Ford. It was found along Route 9 in Marlboro.

“Honestly, I have to go back and get rid of the coyote carcass,” Lavoie added.
