‘Year of the Fiddler’ sets goal of a fiddler in every town

TOWNSHEND — The Festival of Fiddlers on the Green 2020 is now underway. Sponsored by the Northeast Fiddlers Association, the Champlain Valley Fiddlers, and Young Traditions Vermont, it is an endeavor to photo-document a fiddler playing in every Vermont town in the year 2020.

This was attempted in 2019, but ended up just 19 towns shy of meeting the goal. At dusk on Dec. 31, a young man named Caleb P was photographed playing “Goat on the Green” to make Roxbury the 232nd town to be documented out of Vermont's 251.

It has been decided to try one more time to photo document a fiddler playing in every Vermont town within a period of one year, and the help of fiddlers and non-fiddlers alike is needed.

Photos of fiddlers playing anywhere in Vermont in 2020 are needed and can be sent by email to [email protected] or by regular mail to Fiddlers on the Green 2020, P.O. Box 644, Townshend, VT 05353. Cell phone photos, or links to YouTube or Vimeo videos, are welcome.

The photo or video can be of a planned event such as a concert, wedding, or farmers' market, or of a fiddler in her/his own backyard, or in a park, or on the porch of a general store.

Photo submitters are asked to include the name of the fiddler, the town, the date, and whenever possible, the name of the tune being played and names of other musicians in the picture. Progress can be monitored at fiddlersonthegreenvt.com.
