Friel did a great job at Oak Grove School

BRATTLEBORO — As the school year comes to a close, we would like to acknowledge an outstanding educator in our community who is embarking on new challenges and adventures.

After a number of years working as a teacher and administrator in our area, most recently as the exceptional principal of Oak Grove Elementary School in Brattleboro, Michael Friel is leaving this summer to begin a new position at the American Community School in Beirut, Lebanon. The students and staff of the American Community School are very fortunate to have Mike join their school.

In 2002, Mike Friel took the helm of a struggling Oak Grove School during time of challenging transition. Under Mike's leadership, the Oak Grove School staff has transformed the school to a vibrant source of pride for our community. Mike has spearheaded many new community partnerships and championed the Habits of Heart and Mind social curriculum.

Parent involvement is up and so are student test scores. Mike is an adored principal by his students - his caring, yet firm approach, provides positive energy and encouragement throughout the school day. In 2009, Mike was named Vermont Principal of the Year, a much deserved honor.

We feel very fortunate that our children have had Mike as their principal. We will miss his cheerful presence at the school and his saxophone playing at School Sing. While we are sad to see Mike Friel leave Oak Grove, we also feel very fortunate and excited that Jen Hemmingson is taking over as our new school principal. Oak Grove's future is in good hands!

In the meantime, we look forward to seeing reports from Beirut on Mike's blog.

Many thanks to Mike Friel and the entire staff of Oak Grove School!
