Putney families need your support, too

PUTNEY — Most families will soon be enjoying the final days of summer, and thoughts will turn to school, soccer, and the beauty of fall. But for many families, there is a daily struggle to make ends meet.

Putney Family Services has been working for more than 20 years to help support the families of Putney. Our non-profit organization began when a group of concerned teachers realized that many children had needs that were not being met during the school day.

Since those early days, Putney Family Services (PFS) has established a wonderful after-school program for grades K-5 which provides a nurturing, creative environment where children can play, complete homework, and develop friendships. PFS also provides parenting classes and a single moms' support group.

During the summer months, PFS collaborates with the Putney Central School to provide recreation and activities, as well as a healthy lunch each day to children participating in summer math camp. On Thursdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Putney Family Services, with the generous volunteer support of many local medical providers, offers a free walk-in clinic at the Putney Medical Office on Main Street. All are welcome regardless of ability to pay.

Putney Family Services is committed to continuing to provide support for the families of Putney. During these difficult economic times, many families find themselves in need of help with unexpected emergencies or expenses of daily living.

PFS is able to help by constantly working to raise money through grants, donations, and fundraisers. Annual appeal letters have recently been mailed to all residents of Putney in hopes that the community will come together to support the work of this organization.

Recently, there has been a focus on rebuilding downtown Putney, which is so important in maintaining our sense of community, but it is equally important to build up the families that make up this community.

Donations to help continue to provide these valuable programs are much appreciated and can be sent to Putney Family Services, P.O. Box 463, Putney, VT 05346. For information about programs offered by Putney Family Services, call 802-387-2120.
