Latchis Arts’ Spotlight film series reboots with focus on artists

BRATTLEBORO — Latchis Arts' Spotlight Series returns this month with the theme “Portraits of the Artist.”

The series is presented in partnership with the River Gallery School, which has set up a free community art project in the Latchis Theatre lobby.

Stop by anytime the theater is open or while you're waiting for your movie and use the materials provided to make a flower petal to hang on the flower wall in the theater lobby.

Spotlight is a curated series featuring films on a different theme each month. This month's series features films that center on artists in one way or another.

On June 11 and 12, the The Painter and the Thief, a documentary about a Czech artist who develops an unlikely friendship with the man who stole two of her paintings, will be shown.

Frida, the 2002 biopic about Frida Kahlo, starring Salma Hayek, is the featured film on June 18 and 19.

The series concludes on June 25 and 26 with The Unicorn Store, a 2017 feature directed by and starring Brie Larson, about a whimsical painter who takes a humdrum office job after failing out of art school and then gets a chance to fulfill her lifelong dream of owning a unicorn.

Films in June are shown on Saturdays and Sundays at 1 p.m. at the Latchis. Admission is by suggested donation of $10; no one will be turned away.

Proceeds from Spotlight Series films benefit the nonprofit Latchis Arts. For more information, visit latchis.com.
