Local artists focus on the human figure

BRATTLEBORO — A new show by eight local artists featuring drawings made from a live model will host an opening reception during Gallery Walk on Friday, Nov. 4 at 118 Elliot.

The show is inspired by Jason Alden's Drawing Studio and most of the artists at one time or another have participated in live drawing at the studio, where many of the drawings in the show were produced.

Artists include Jason Alden, Peter Harris, Matthew Beck, Martha Werman, Tina Olsen, Markie Sallick, and Kevin Burke, as well as John Loggia, 118 Elliot's director.

“The works are on a spectrum that ranges from accurate representation to abstract interpretation but all begin with the unaided hand creating images based on observation,” Alden, who co-curated the show with 118 Elliot, said in a news release.

“Good drawing translates into all aspects of picture making, whatever the media, because drawing is a constant refinement of how we see,” he said.

“Drawing from the model conveys as much about the artist as the subject,” said Loggia. “The act of observation and transforming the three-dimensional human figure into a two-dimensional rendering requires a series of choices and actions that reveal the temperament of the artist and the concepts that guide them.”

The Vermont Jazz Center will provide music at the opening reception featuring its youngest performers to kick off the Emerging Artists Festival weekend (story, B1).
