Putney Library celebrates 'DINOvember'

PUTNEY — November is “DINOvember” at the Putney Public Library, 55 Main Street, when children and adults celebrate all things dinosaur. The library is offering drop-in activities and scheduled programs throughout the month.

On Saturday, Nov. 12, at 11 a.m. learn how to draw dinosaurs with John Steven Gurney, author-illustrator of the picture book Dinosaur Train and the graphic novel Fuzzy Baseball #4: DiNO-Hitters.

Susan Hessey will present a dinosaur storytime for preschoolers and their caregivers on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 11 a.m.

On Saturday, Nov. 19, at 11 a.m., meet Dinoman, who organizers say will use “magic, merry mayhem, and magnificent props (giant inflatable dinosaurs!)” to take the audience on a trip throughout the Mesozoic era and answer questions such as: How do we know dinosaurs were here? What is a fossil? How are they made? This program is for all ages.

The library will present a Zoom event for adults with biographer Bob McMaster on Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 6:30 p.m. McMaster will host a presentation on the life of Connecticut Valley resident and scientist Edward Hitchcock.

McMasters published All the Light Here Comes from Above: The Life and Legacy of Edward Hitchcock in 2021. Hitchcock, an Amherst College professor, was not only one of the 19th century's most eminent scientists, but also, McMaster claims, “the first scientist to find evidence of dinosaurs in North America. His landmark research on what he called the 'fossil footmarks' of the Connecticut Valley led him to theorize that prehistoric ancient birds once roamed the planet.”

Stop in to vote for Putney's favorite dinosaur in their “Dinosaur Madness” matchup. T Rex, the 2021 favorite, will be reigning over this contest. Who will be the favorite in 2022? Everyone is invited to make flying pterodactyl puppets in the Children's Room to take home.

All these programs are free and open to the public. For more information, visit putneylibrary.org or call 802-387-4407. The Putney Public Library is open Monday through Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
