BMH offers 16-session Arthritis Foundation exercise program

BRATTLEBORO — On Tuesdays and Fridays, starting April 5, Brattleboro Memorial Hospital will offer a 16-session (eight-week) series of classes specifically for people with arthritis. The classes will run through to Friday, May 27. Classes will be held from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the Exercise Room in the New Brew Barry Conference Center located on the lower level of the main hospital.

Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist Sandra Brodsky will cover a variety of topics including arthritis myths; risk factors associated with arthritis; relationship between weight, physical activity and arthritis; recommended physical activity for people with arthritis; and tips for safe physical activity.

This low-impact, gentle, joint-safe exercise program has been documented to help decrease arthritis pain and relieve stiffness while increasing flexibility and range of motion. Utilizing balance and endurance exercises, participants can build stronger muscles, in addition to keeping joints flexible, maintain muscle strength, improve balance, and build overall stamina. People with similar type diseases, other forms of arthritis, and those wishing to begin a low-impact exercise program are also invited to attend.

Brodsky has a master's degree in Therapeutic Recreation. She has worked with special populations in a variety of settings for 30 years, and has taught exercise classes ranging from low- to high-impact aerobics for adults. She recently became re-certified in the new and revised Arthritis Exercise Instructor Certification Program.

An inflammation, arthritis is the number one cause of disability in the United States, and one in five Americans have been doctor-diagnosed. This course will provide interactive health education lessons and stress-reducing relaxation techniques to help participants better manage their arthritis. The instructor is familiar with the challenges of painful joints and limited range of motion.

The class will be mostly done while seated, with some standing for those whose ability allows. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear. Before beginning any exercise program, always check with your physician. Pre-registration is requested and enrollment limited. Participants are requested and encouraged to attend all 16 sessions. Handouts will be provided.

The cost is $80 for the 16 sessions, due at the first session. For those wishing to come try a class, the cost will be $5 and then the balance would be due for the remainder of the course. To register for this series, call 802-257-8877.
