The written word

BELLOWS FALLS "Women Breaking Silence": Elayne Clift will discuss women writers who dared to tell the truth about their lives, thereby freeing other women to do so. This talk reveals the history and meaning of women's diaries, journals, and memoirs as we explore the enforced silence of "good girls and fine ladies" that kept women marginalized and invisible for centuries--until a few brave women put pen to paper, which they have done (often surreptitiously) throughout history. Their courage and musings inspired others, including such 20th century writers as Virginia Woolf, May Sarton, Alice Walker, Gloria Steinem, Sharon Olds, Sylvia Plath, and a host of others. What will these women inspire in all of us if we break our own silence in order to tell some truths about our lives?. 6 p.m. Free. Rockingham Free Public Library, 65 Westminster St. Information: 802-463-4270; Click for more info on Web in new window.
