Late-spring weather, with lots of showers, ahead for Southern Vermont

Originally published in The Commons issue #459 (Wednesday, May 16, 2018). This story appeared on page A4.

Good day to you, southern Vermonters! After yesterday’s showers and thunderstorms, we should be out of the severe weather woods for the upcoming week. Be sure to enjoy the fair weather which will end the current week, as rainy conditions are expected between Friday night and Sunday night.

While some lulls are possible during this rainy period, expect generally wet weather with unseasonably cool temperatures for Saturday, and seasonable, milder temperatures for Sunday. Early next week looks fair for now. Let’s jump into the details!

For Wednesday, the cold front that gathered up and swept yesterday’s showers and storms out to sea continues to truck south and east, allowing for more pleasant weather to spread over southern Vermont.

Highs will reach the mid 60s under partly sunny skies with lows in the low 50s. Expect a light southeast wind with a few gusts to 20 mph possible.

For Thursday, high pressure moves more firmly into our region, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the low 70s. Lows will be in the upper 40s under increasingly cloudy skies.

For Friday, the front that passes to our south, will start to push north again, along with another low pressure system to our southwest. Skies will continue to cloud up with cloudy skies expect by the afternoon and highs in the low 60s.

Rain will move in at some point during the nighttime hours, and lows will drop into the 40s.

For Saturday, expect a rainy, cool day as low pressure and a frontal boundary pushes back into the region. Rain should last into Saturday night before possibly lightening up for a time into Sunday morning.

Highs on Saturday will be in the upper 50s with lows in the 40s.

For Sunday, we could see additional showers or impulses of rain as the front’s influence will still be felt in southern Vermont. However, it should have lifted north of us, allowing us to get into the low 70s for highs.

Fair weather moves in by early next week with seasonable highs near 70 degrees. Have a great week!
