BRATTLEBORO Beginner Chess Classes: Chess helps children develop their problem-solving skills and increase their attention span. The improved ability to focus and concentration gained from playing chess usually transfers to academics. Instruction will introduce basic principles of chess, simple strategies and tactics, and provide a venue to play practice games. Eric Strickland instructs. 4 - 5 p.m. on Thursdays. BRATTLEBORO Open Gym & Game Room for All Ages: Free supervised program and a great way to spend time after school! Play with your children or leave them in the care of the Rec. & Parks Staff. Open Gym is for recreation basketball (sneakers must be worn on gym floor). The Game Room is open for bumper pool, foosball, ping pong, and air hockey. Other activities during Open Gym: homework, snack area, arts & crafts, board games, chess, Legos. GUILFORD Falls Prevention Tai Chi Classes: This is a custom Tai Chi practice emphasizing slow, rhythmic movement designed to improve balance, strength, and general well-being. BRATTLEBORO Merry Mulch Tree Collection Service to Brattleboro Residents: Members of the BUHS band and chorus will transport undecorated trees from homes to a community garden in West Brattleboro where they will be chipped into mulch to be used by the gardeners. Since the town does not offer curbside pick-up of trees, this service saves residents the hassle of transporting their own trees. DL for requesting removal is 1/16. Three Sat. pick-up dates: 1/4, 1/11, 1/18. This program, in its 29th year, is endorsed by the VT Dept. of Agriculture and the New Hampshire/Vermont Christmas Tree Assn. Through Saturday, January 18. $10 donation (Proceeds go towards the BUHS Music Dept.'s trip to NYC in April). Brattleboro Union High School.
