BRATTLEBORO Brian D. Cohen - A Retrospective / Artist Talk and Poetry Reading with Chard deNiord: Brian D. Cohen is a printmaker, painter, educator, and writer. As a printmaker, Cohen has shown in over 40 individual exhibitions and participated in over 200 group shows. In his watercolors and austere b&w images, he invites the viewer to slow down, and in slowing down, begin to see. We, the viewers, are the humans who complete the pictures that speak to our humanity and the nature of existence. 12/3, 5 p.m: Artist Talk and Poetry Reading with Chard deNiord. "Cohen's work helps us to see the beauty of the mechanical world, the endurance of the natural one, and a way to contemplate the contradictions and complexities of human existence that both challenge us and give us comfort and hope." - Deborah Lee Luskin. Through Sunday, December 11. Free. Mitchell-Giddings Fine Arts, 183 Main St. Open hours: Thur.-Sat., 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sun., 12 noon-5 p.m. 802-251-8290; Click for more info on Web in new window.
BRATTLEBORO Charles Ramsburg Artist Talk Q&A: Ramsburg's work is a visual journal, most often drifting toward abstract imagery, occasionally being explicitly narrative. He works in a multitude of mediums: charcoal and eraser on paper, acrylics, wood, metal, leather, papier-mache and twine. Each of his series, although in different mediums, follows the pull of what Kandinsky called "inner necessity" - meaning the communication between form and the human soul. Over his 50-plus years of working, he's attempted to unpack various belief systems but found them wanting. Hence, his Text Series and Pathing Sticks are etched with a writing system of his own. And because of his love of nature, his language, his "inner necessity," is drawn, etched, carved, even welded into his work. 1 - 3 p.m. Free. CX Silver Gallery, 814 Western Ave. Information: cxsilvergallery.com/charles-ramsburg, info@cxsilvergallery.com, 802-257-7898 x 1.
NEWFANE "Face to Face" Portraits by William Dixon: Dixon welcomes you to the world of portraiture, the art of conveyance, the confirmation of existence, and the role of the photographer in connecting subject and viewer. "The appeal of portrait photography is that, for a second, you have created a permanent record of a person at a certain place at a certain time and experience the face to face flow of communication between the 2-dimensional image and the person observing it.". 12/3, 1-2:30 p.m: Artist's Reception. For the past 10 years, Dixon has focused on alternative processes of printing (cyanotype, salt, vandyke, palladium, carbon). One wall of the gallery will be devoted to the portrait prints using these alternative printing methods. Through Friday, December 30. Free. Crowell Gallery at the Moore Free Library, 23 West St. Information: Gallery hours: Tues., Wed. and Fri: 1-5 p.m., Thurs: 1-6 p.m., Sat. 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
