PUTNEY Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present singer/songwriter Karan Casey: Singing songs charged with a sense of social responsibility in a career spanning over 25 years, Casey was among the vanguard of the Irish music revival's 'third wave' of the early '90s and founding member of Irish American band "Solas" before launching her solo career in 1999. Though steeped early on in Irish traditional and folk music, she's long followed an eclectic path, whether studying classical music, fronting jazz bands, or working with Frank Harte - a much-revered folk/traditional singer from Dublin. The list of artists she's collaborated with is similarly diverse - James Taylor, Maura O'Connell, Karen Matheson, the Boston Pops Orchestra, Liam Clancy, Tim O'Brien, The Chieftains, The Dubliners, Bela Fleck. A Waterford, Ireland native, she's performed extensively throughout North America, Europe, Japan. Karan's repertoire has long included traditional, contemporary, original songs that speak to the condition of women, and her "Nine Apples of Gold" album follows that precedent. In 2018, she helped found FairPle - an organization aimed at achieving fairness/gender balance for female performers in Irish traditional and folk music. Her songs draw inspiration from the personal to historical and political, touching on themes of family, loss, love, empowerment of women, Irish revolutionary struggle. GUILFORD Beginning Tai Chi Classes for Fall Prevention (New offering from Guilford Cares): This class will start from scratch - a great opportunity for total beginners or those who would like to brush up on previous experience while enjoying the newly renovated historic Grange building. Sometimes called an "internal martial art," tai chi is an exercise system combining disciplined, graceful movements with an invigorating sense of the body and surrounding space. Although the movements are slow, they contain great power. We try to coordinate hand and foot movements, breathing naturally, moving with slow continuous flow. By doing so, we improve strength and balance. Instructor Leah Gessner is certified by Tai Chi Vermont in this Fall Prevention practice. 9:30 a.m. on Thursdays. No charge (donations welcome).
