Scattered showers and storms expected Thursday, Saturday night

Hello and good day to you, southern Vermonters. As mentioned in last week's column, the tropical system did make it up this way, but never really affected southern Vermont. The wind we happily did without, but the rain we needed very much. It's unfortunate that we missed out, but we've got a couple chances for wet weather coming up this week.

For Wednesday, the remnants of Hermine well to our south and east will begin to be pushed eastward and out to sea by an approaching short wave and overall zonal flow (i.e., a west-to-east steering current across the U.S.). Bye bye, Hermine, you created many a new gray hair in weather people up and down the East Coast! A slight chance of showers is possible, with highs 75-80 and humidity beginning to increase.

For Thursday, high pressure will be re-establishing itself off the southeast U.S. coast, sending warmer and more humid air northeastward into the region. As this happens, a weak frontal boundary will approach from our west, and could foster scattered showers and thunderstorms out ahead of the front. This activity could last into the evening. Expect highs in the low 80s and lows in the mid 60s.

For Friday and Saturday, even more humid weather will move into the region, with dew point temperatures getting up into the mid to upper 60s, which, while not oppressive, is quite humid. Plenty of sunshine is expected with highs into the middle 80s on average, and a few upper 80s readings are not out of the question. Lows in the 60s.

By Saturday night into Sunday morning, a stronger cold front will move in from the west. This front is connected to a strong low pressure system that will be racing eastward across eastern Canada, ushering in a new breath of fresh, cooler Canadian air for late Sunday into early next week. We could see more numerous showers and thunderstorms Saturday night into Sunday morning with this feature.

As of now, Sunday afternoon through Tuesday looks partly to mostly sunny, with cooler and drier air in place. Highs should sit somewhere between 70-75 on average, with lows in the 50s.

Have a great week!
