Townshend votes on zoning study July 19

TOWNSHEND — Voters will be asked to weigh in on “a townwide study as to the feasibility of implementing zoning bylaws” at a Special Town Meeting on Thursday, July 19 at 7 p.m. at the Town Hall.

A subsequent article asks voters to appropriate unbudgeted funds for such a study, should it be approved by the electorate.

In last week's issue of The Commons, the date of the meeting was reported incorrectly.

Selectboard Chair Kathy Hege also took issue with several aspects of the story, particularly any connection between the meeting and the varied efforts of West River Valley residents to thwart plans for a Dollar General store in Townshend.

“It, the vote, has nothing to do with Dollar General and the proposed store and tying the Special Meeting to the Dollar General issue is misleading,” she asserted, by way of clarification. “Putting the two together implies that the Meeting will result in some kind of halting measure against the development.”

“Perhaps in the future that might become the issue, but right now all the Select Board is doing is asking all of the voters in Townshend, not just the petitioners, whether or not they want to consider zoning,” Hege wrote.
