BRATTLEBORO — A new exhibit in the Brooks House, 130 Main St., opened July 6, spotlighting the artwork of three Brattleboro-West Arts members.
The show, titled “New Passage,” will feature paintings by Kay Curtis, Julia Eva Bacon, and Cai Xi in the Atrium Hallway Gallery. The new works will be on view through the summer.
The exhibit is at the invitation of fellow Brattleboro-West Arts members Petria Mitchell and Jim Giddings, who worked with Brooks House management to create a venue in the hallway to showcase local artists.
Kay Curtis will have drypoint monoprints from her set named “Queen Anne's Lace: The Circle Comes Around.” The set metaphorically visits the key steps one undergoes in moving from birth to death.
Julia Eva Bacon will show new, smaller works in oil of birds and wildlife that she views as animal spirit guides.
In a news release, Cai Xi says of her “Edge” series: “Revisiting gymnastics and calligraphy experiences as a child, finding myself jumping, stretching, and reaching as I painted, the experience of 'Edge' is about stepping into and out of myself. Art is about paradox: appearance-disappearance, life-death, nothingness-wholeness, chaos-groundedness, emptiness-substance, movement-fixity.”
