Activists plan ‘Rally & Ride’ for climate solutions

BRATTLEBORO — On Saturday, Sept. 8, the “Windham County Rise for Climate - Rally & Ride” joins a global day of action to demand local leaders commit to climate solutions.

In a news release, organizers say the local event is timed to precede California Gov. Jerry Brown's Global Climate Action Summit, scheduled for Sept. 12-14, which will bring together political leaders and people from around the world to “take ambition to the next level” and “put the globe on track to prevent dangerous climate change and realize the historic Paris Agreement."

In Windham County, the intention is to highlight the role active transportation plays in reducing carbon emissions while improving the health and well-being of people and communities.

Approximately 40 percent of Vermont's emissions come from transportation, and much of this centers on single-occupancy vehicles. This event strives to envision the changes that might occur if the system centered instead on public transportation, carpooling, and walking and biking.

There will be an opportunity to hear thought leaders share solutions; meet activists working on the ground to improve bike infrastructure and increase public transportation; engage folks in walking and biking as ways of commuting; and share ideas about a People's Transportation Plan; as well kid-friendly events such as stenciling and face painting, plus refreshments.

The event kicks off at 3 p.m. Either meet at the bike rack across from the Brattleboro Food Co-op to participate in the march up Main Street or meet at the Brattleboro Farmers' Market parking lot (Route 9 in West Brattleboro) with your bike to join in the “critical mass” ride.

Those who want to make signs or decorate themselves or their bikes are encouraged to come 20 minutes early.

The hope is to get as many people out on the streets of Brattleboro as possible; families with kids welcome. Both groups will travel to the Brattleboro Common, where the rally begins at 4 p.m. All are welcome at the rally, whether or not they're able to join in the ride or the march.
