Putney vigil commemorates Sandy Hook Massacre

PUTNEY - A vigil to commemorate those killed by a gunman in Sandy Hook, Conn., on Dec. 14, 2012, will gather in Putney, on the sidewalk across from the Putney General Store and Tavern on Friday, Dec. 14, at 5:30 p.m.

Six years ago, the world was shocked by the news that 20 young schoolchildren and seven adults in Sandy Hook had been killed by a lone gunman.

The slaughter of these innocents amplified the ongoing outcry for common-sense gun laws. Since then, Vermont has passed several such laws. People will gather to remember those killed that day and to remember that there is more work to do to help keep our children and all Vermonters safe.

Bring a candle and warm clothes, appropriate for the weather. For information, email [email protected].

2019 Catholic Worker Calendars now available at Everyone's Books

BRATTLEBORO - Rita Corbin, a graphic artist and printmaker, became involved in the Catholic Worker movement while living in New York City in the 1950s.

Corbin became a lifelong contributor and was one of the three primary Catholic Worker artists. She began publishing the Catholic Worker calendar with her original art and hand-lettering, as well as note cards and Christmas cards.

She and her children moved to Brattleboro in 1981, and she lived here off and on until her death in an auto accident in 2011.

Since her death, her children, who live in the Brattleboro area, continue to publish the calendar and cards using her artwork. Although the calendars are primarily sold by mail-order through the Catholic Worker newspaper, they will be for sale at Everyone's Books in Brattleboro during the holiday season.
