Accumulating snow Wednesday kicks off cold outbreak; Sunday storm possible

Good day to you, citizens of southeastern Vermont! We've got snow to contend with today, and some substantial accumulations are possible in the highlands of western and northern Windham County, where up to six inches of snow could fall by Thursday morning!

After this system departs, very cold air will sweep in behind it with blustery conditions Thursday and Friday. We're watching potential for some snow on Sunday, but for now it's a low chance of transpiring. Thereafter we remain more seasonably cold with dry conditions into early next week. Let's jump into the details!

For Wednesday, an upper low will push into eastern New York and then transfer its energy to the Gulf of Maine where it will rapidly strengthen. As this happens, temps aloft will cool rapidly, and any rain showers will turn to a period of moderate to perhaps heavy snow Wednesday morning. This will likely drop a coating to as much as 2 or 3 inches in southern Vermont by noon.

Highs will be in the low to mid 30s, and northwest winds will gust over 30 mph at times. Expect this wind to persist Wednesday night and into Thursday.

It must be noted that with plenty of low level moisture still remaining, and a strong westerly flow being pulled across southern Vermont and into the developing gale in the Gulf of Maine, upslope snow showers will develop and be persistent across western and northern portions of Windham County.

This will generate snow showers throughout Wednesday and Wednesday night, and will likely last into Thursday morning. This could bring another 2 to 6 inches of accumulation before it winds down Thursday. Wednesday night lows will dip into the low to mid 20s.

For Thursday, after snow showers end, expect a mostly cloudy day with highs in the low to mid 20s with gusty northwest winds. Lows will plummet into the single digits as skies clear out.

For Friday and Saturday, it will be brutally cold but fair. Highs will be in the low teens Friday and upper teens Saturday. Lows will be in the single digits below zero Friday night, and single digits Saturday night as clouds increase.

For Sunday, a coastal storm may bring some light snow to the region, but at this point it could just as easily track out to sea to our south. Expect some snow showers with mostly cloudy skies for now and highs in the 20s and lows in the single digits. Fair and more seasonable cold is expected early next week. Have a great week!
