Broken sprinkler line causes downtown flooding

BRATTLEBORO — A broken sprinkler valve to the Paramount Building on 167 Main St. was the cause of a large water leak in downtown Brattleboro on Feb. 5 that caused a considerable amount of damage to the sidewalk and a traffic island at the intersection of Main and High streets.

According to the Brattleboro Department of Public Works, water service and electrical power were turned off for several hours until Utilities Division crews contained the leak. Workers finished the emergency repair around 3 a.m. on Feb. 6.

The Utilities Division estimates approximately 160,000 gallons of water was discharged from the broken sprinkler valve.

With the water line now repaired, the DPW said that Utilities Division workers will remove the undermined, damaged sidewalk and fill it in with gravel.

As weather permits, the DPW said a thin coat of asphalt will be installed over the gravel until sidewalk can be permanently restored in the spring.

The DPW said that one of the water main control valves broke yesterday during the shutdown causing a small leak. The leak was causing iciness at the intersection of Main and High streets. Highway Division crews will continue to monitor and salt the area until repairs to the water valve is complete.

Work will likely continue the remainder of this week and into next week make the sidewalk and water leak repairs, the DPW said.
