Spring arrives, but winter lingers

Good day to you, fine folks of southeastern Vermont! While spring arrives at 5:58 p.m. on Wednesday, just prior to sunset, we have one more shot at winter weather by Thursday morning.

In fact, light snow accumulations are possible in western Windham County on Thursday morning before changing to rain showers during the day. In addition, rain showers may turn back to snow late Thursday night. More snow showers are possible Friday before we calm down by Saturday.

Sunday is definitely the pick of the weekend with much milder temperatures! Fair weather should last into at least Monday, with showery weather possible by the middle of next week. With our synopsis firmly in tow, let's jump into the daily details!

For Wednesday, high pressure will be tracking east of southern New England and will allow a southwesterly, milder flow to develop across the region. Expect highs to crest into the low to upper 40s, coolest in the mountains. Wednesday night will feature an increase in clouds and lows dropping into the upper 20s to low 30s.

For Thursday, a northern stream upper level low will attempt to dig more southerly through Lake Ontario and New York state. As this happens, a disturbance over the southern Ohio Valley will track northeast in the southwesterly flow. This will allow rain and snow showers to develop across southern Vermont early in the morning when cold air is still present.

This set-up could produce 1 to 3 inches of snow over the high peaks, with a coating to an inch elsewhere. Some areas may just see mixed rain and snow with no accumulation. Any snow turns to rain as the day wears on with highs in the 40s.

On Thursday night, a coastal low develops and tracks near Nantucket Island. This may cause rain to change back to snow before ending at night, and additional coatings can't be ruled out. Lows will drop into the low 30s.

On Friday, as this coastal low bombs out in the Gulf of Maine, it will produce a strong pressure gradient and gusty northwesterly winds over southern Vermont. With leftover moisture present, we could see numerous snow showers during the day and into the evening, with additional light accumulations up to an inch or two possible. Highs will be in the upper 30s to low 40s and lows will be in the 20s.

Saturday through Monday look partly to mostly sunny with highs in the mid 30s Saturday and lows in the low 20s. Highs Sunday will reach the upper 40s with lows in the 30s, and highs Monday will be in the 40s. Some showers are possible by Tuesday. Have a great week!
