Master stone-wall builder to speak at Historical Society meeting

DUMMERSTON — Dan Snow, master stone wall builder, will present a program on Dry Stone Wall Pounds at the Dummerston Historical Society's quarterly meeting on Thursday, July 18, at 7:30 p.m.

Snow is among the nation's premier dry stone wall builders, and an author who happens to be a Dummerston resident.

He will talk about the history and making of the Dummerston town pound during 2008 and 2009. Snow teaches dry stone wall building and, during five workshops with 44 participants, recreated the town pound adjacent to the Historical Society Schoolhouse in Dummerston Center.

The original livestock pound was built in October 1796 by Benjamin Alvord for the town of Dummerston. The size of the fence was 4 feet wide at the base and 6 feet in height. Each of the four sides was 36 feet long. The site is near where the Historical Society schoolhouse stands today, but nothing remains of the original pound.

Author of three books - In the Company of Stone: The Art of the Stone Wall, Listening to Stone, and The Solitary Stoneworker - Snow has taught and created stone structures throughout the U.S., Newfoundland, and Scandinavia.

A brief business meeting of the society takes place at 7 p.m. The Historical Society is fully accessible, all events are free of charge, and one need not be a member to attend. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, call 802-254-9311.
