Vermont Theatre Company to hold auditions for ‘The 39 Steps’

BRATTLEBORO — Vermont Theatre Company has announced auditions for Patrick Barlow's The 39 Steps. Performances will be Dec. 13-15 and 20-22 at the Evening Star Grange in Dummerston Center.

Auditions will be held at the Brattleboro Union High School auditorium on Friday, Aug. 30, at 6:30 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 31, at 1 p.m.

The 39 Steps is an adaption of Alfred Hitchcock's film and John Buchan's book. It is a thrilling chase up and down Britain as one man finds himself embroiled in a plot with national secrets on the line. The show is a fast-paced comedy with thrills and music.

Four acting roles are available, and a piano accompanist is sought. All acting roles require significant physical ability; improv experience and the ability to whistle are a plus. Specific roles are:

• Richard Hannay: Our protagonist, 30-40s, suave and intelligent but in over his head. Quick on his feet and with his wit, though often the straight man amid the craziness surrounding him. English accent negotiable.

• Leading Lady: Actress covering several roles, including a spy, a young wife, and a “Hitchcock blonde” - icy, elegant, and bold. Satisfactory German, English, and Scottish accents desired.

• Clowns 1 and 2: Two actors of any age/gender to play all other roles, often including multiple roles in a single scene. Requires many quick changes and bits of physical comedy. Various accents and unique physical traits (i.e. double-jointed) preferred.

• Accompanist/Narrator: Familiarity with ragtime, stride, and jazz piano is ideal; improvisational, compositional, and acting experience a bonus. Comfort delivering lines required; role includes brief monologues as narrator.

Sides will be available at auditions. To review them ahead of time, or for further information (including if you are unable to make audition times), email the director at [email protected].
