DUMMERSTON — An evening of community contra and square dances will take place at the Evening Star Grange in Dummerston Center on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
The dance is a benefit for Families First, a local nonprofit organization that serves adults and children in our community who have special needs. Enjoy an evening of contras while supporting a highly worthwhile cause.
Founded in 1996, Families First serves nearly 100 families by providing services that promote independent living, enhance self-esteem, and cultivate community membership through caring and respectful relationships. All donations received at the door will go toward weekly peer group activities.
The band for this evening of contra dancing will be “The Full Catastrophe” - which is a tongue-in-cheek reference to family life as expressed in the classic film Zorba the Greek.
Laurie Indenbaum fiddles, Jim Fownes will be on piano, and Andy Davis will do the calling and play accordion. Davis specializes in making the dances fun and accessible for all levels of dance experience. All are welcome.
Two other dances in this series take place on Oct. 19 and Nov. 16, also at the Evening Star Grange in Dummerston Center. The dances are always preceded by a community potluck supper at 5:30 p.m.
The Village Dance Series provides an opportunity for families and friends to come together to enjoy one of New England's traditional pastimes.
The program will include traditional New England contra dances, square dances, circle mixers, and couple dances. Experience isn't necessary, as all the dances are taught. Although the dances are geared for school-age children, all ages and abilities are welcome.
