New hours at Lydia Taft Pratt Library
DUMMERSTON - To better serve their patrons, the Lydia Taft Pratt Library is adding an additional day to its weekly schedule. Beginning this week, the library will be open Tuesdays from 2 to 6 p.m., Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Lydia Taft Pratt Library is a free library with no membership fees or fines. Its collection includes large print, graphic novels, audio books, and DVDs. It offers wi-fi, programming for adults and children, an adult book club, story time, interlibrary loan services, and Recorded Books digital audio books and e-books.

Vermont Center for Photography offers private tutorials
BRATTLEBORO - For those who like to learn in a one-on-one setting, or whose schedules make it difficult to sign up for classes, Vermont Center for Photography is offering private tutorial sessions in a variety of subjects for beginning to advanced learners.
One-on-one sessions are offered in traditional, digital and alternative photo processes. Instructors are drawn from a talented pool of photographers from the tri-state region, each of whom has professional experience in his or her specific area of focus.
Tutorial meeting times are flexible, to be arranged between the instructor and student. Sessions may be held at the Center, at the instructor's studio, or at any other agreed-upon location. Tutorials can be as brief as one hour, or continued over a longer period.
VCP's well-ventilated and spacious darkroom is one of the only publicly-accessible darkroom facilities in the state. Its digital capabilities include new Macintosh computers and professional-quality Epson scanners and printers. VCP also maintains a fully stocked photo retail store where a wide range of photographic equipment and supplies can be purchased.

The geology of Dummerston
DUMMERSTON - The Dummerston Conservation Commission is sponsoring a unique opportunity to spend the evening with Marjorie Gale, the Vermont State Geologist and Director of the Vermont Geological Survey.
Her free talk takes place on Thursday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m., at the Dummerston Congregational Church in Dummerston Center. She will describe how Dummerston came to be - from the early rock and land formations through the glaciers and the development of the town's soils to the landscape we see today.
There will be plenty of time for questions and a chance to study geologic and surface maps of the region. This event is free, and children are encouraged to attend.
Newfane church hosts concert
NEWFANE - On Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m., at Newfane Congregational Church, 11 Church St., Fiona Joy Hawkins and Rebecca Daniel will present a concert from their “The Lightness of Dark” tour.
“The Lightness of Dark” is “an ethereal and collaborative journey into the depths of loss, mourning, and recovery,” according to a news release. Recorded in Australia for piano, violin, string quartet, and voice, the album focuses on the way forward and the exploration of lightness within the dark.
The concert is a fundraiser for Newfane Congregational Church. Refreshments will follow the concert. There is a $20 suggested donation.
RFPL hosts advance care planning workshops
BELLOWS FALLS - A free workshop on how to complete an Advance Directive will be offered by Brattleboro Area Hospice and Bayada Hospice on two consecutive Wednesdays, Sept. 25 and Oct. 2, from 6 to 7 p.m., at the Rockingham Free Public Library, 65 Westminster St.
Thinking and talking about Advance Care Planning while healthy can make decision-making easier in a medical crisis. Participants will also learn what their parents and children (18 and over) should have in place.
Don Freeman of Brattleboro Area Hospice and Eliza Eager of Bayada will cover the medical and personal issues that Advanced Directives address. They'll provide all the necessary forms and walk people through the process, step-by-step.

Craft sales space available at Grafton Fall Festival
GRAFTON - Crafters looking for a well-established venue for their wares should consider renting a space at the 38th annual Grafton Firefighters Fall Festival.
This two-day event is held each year on the grounds of the Grafton Firehouse and features a popular tag sale and homemade food from the local PTG and draws a large crowd every year.
