Hello and good day to you, residents of lovely Windham County, Vermont! I hope things are well with you.
I want to start by apologizing for the Sunday blunder. When I wrote the column last week, it did not look like a soaking rainstorm was moving in early this past Sunday. Small timing changes 3 to 4 days out can cause bigger impacts down the line, and unfortunately that's what happened.
Moving back into the present moment, we've got some dynamic weather changes on the way for southern Vermont this week!
We're going to become quite mild to end the month of October, with an increase in both temperatures, showers, and windy conditions during the second half of Wednesday into Friday morning.
Thereafter, we will calm down, clear out, and cool our jets from Friday night through Monday morning with fair but below-seasonal temperatures. Those are the broad brushstrokes, so let's paint in the daily details together, shall we?
For Wednesday, high pressure drifts southeast well east of New England. This will encourage a more southerly flow across Vermont. This will foster high temps in the low 60s, but will also increase moisture at all levels. Expect a mostly cloudy day with patchy drizzle and a few light showers for the first half of the day.
Thereafter, moisture and a localized trough (troughs induce precipitation, usually) will combine to produce an increase of showers both in number and intensity later on Wednesday and especially overnight through early Thursday morning, with lows in the low 50s. Patchy fog is also possible.
For Thursday, we should see a lull in shower activity earlier in the day. Highs will again reach the low to mid 60s, and it will be quite humid to end October.
As low pressure tracks northeast through the Great Lakes, its strong cold front will drape across our region. This will bring more showers back into Windham County later on Thursday afternoon, with heavy rain and southerly wind gusts of 30-40 mph at times Thursday night into early Friday morning. We could see 1-2 inches of rain, and lows will dip into the upper 40s to low 50s.
For Friday, we start off with some showers and clouds, but should quickly clear out with increasing sunshine and winds gusting up to 40mph or so at times, making for a blustery day. Highs should reach the 50s but will plummet all day, bottoming out into the low 30s at night.
Saturday through Tuesday looks generally fair and mostly sunny with highs in the 40s to low 50s and lows in the mid 20s to low 30s. There's a low chance for some flurries Sunday afternoon over the western mountains from the season's first lake effect event.
